Title
Melancholy Disaster of His Majesty’s Ship the Guardian
Description
English: GUARDIAN, H.M.S. MELANCHOLY DISASTER OF HIS MAJESTY’S SHIP THE GUARDIAN, bound to Botany Bay with stores and convicts, Lieut. Riou, commander, which struck on an island of ice, December 24, 1789: providential escape of part of the crew in boats, fortitude of the captain, and wonderful recovery of the vessel. Also an account of an Indian woman &c Duodecimo, folding frontispiece, pp. [ii] + [7]-28, bound in modern burgundy cloth. London, Thomas Egg, n.d. [1808?]. See Ferguson, 464.

Distressing situation of the Guardian sloop, Capt. Riou, after striking on a floating Island of ice

Engraving and frontispiece from one of a well-known series of sensational pamphlets about ‘dreadful shipwrecks’, and not a factually accurate one: the ship is represented more as a frigate than a storeship.
