The red line shows how many teams were in finals that season. The green squares show where Melbourne placed at the conclusion of the finals series (i.e. A green square at 2 would mean Melbourne were defeated in the Grand Final). Note: Melbourne was in recess during the seasons 1916, 1917 and 1918.
