English: Memorial Baptist Church, 770 Humboldt Parkway, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. The work of the architectural firm of Lewis & Hill, the Gothic Revival design of the church seems simple and austere at first glance, but subtle details emerge upon closer inspection, such as a main entrance framed by Gibbs surrounds and flanked by a vestibule with crenellated parapets and florid pinnacles along the roofline. The building was originally home to the relatively short-lived Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, a congregation that was founded in 1911 as a mission of the no-longer-extant St. James Episcopal on Swan Street and disbanded by the diocese in 1960, citing a decrease in church attendance connected to changing neighborhood demographics. Memorial Baptist Church was founded in 1964 and has worshiped here for the entirety of its existence. |
