English: Memorial Garden for the brave men of X-Craft. This garden was opened on Sunday 26th June 2005, by John Lorimer DSO, in honour of the brave men of Midget Submarines (X-Craft) and Human Torpedoes. Between 1942-45, The Kyles Hydropathic Hotel (demolished shortly after WW2, see 1310281) was requisitioned as HMS Varbel, and used as the HQ for the 12th Submarine Flotilla (X-Craft Midget Submarines). They operated in Norway, Italy and the Far East - and between them they won four Victoria Crosses, 65 Prestigious Medals and were mentioned in dispatches more than one hundred times. |
