English: St Luke's Church, Charlton next Woolwich, Kent, north aisle, memorial to Spencer Perceval (1762-1812), Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1809 until his assassination in May 1812. Above it, adorned with the coronet of a baron, is the funeral hatchment of his elder brother Charles Perceval, 2nd Baron Arden, with the Perceval family motto sub cruce candida (under the white cross), and the Royal arms of Queen Anne. Charles Perceval, 2nd Baron Arden (1756–1840) was 6th son of John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont. He married Margaretta Elizabeth, daughter of General Sir Thomas Spencer Wilson, 6th Baronet (1727-1798). Arms: Quarterly of 4: 1st & 4th grand quarters: Argent, on a chief indented gules three crosses pattée of the field (Perceval) quartering: 2nd & 3rd grand quarterly: 1&4: Barry nebulée of six or and gules (Lovel) (Debrett's Peerage, 1968, p.409); 2&3: ........; impaling: Sable, a wolf rampant in chief three estoiles or (Arms of Maryon-Wilson). 'Charlton next Woolwich' was an ancient parish in the county of Kent, which became part of the metropolitan area of London in 1855. |
