Description |
English: In 1925, the Great Northern Railway Company began work on its new Cascade Tunnel near Stevens Pass, Washington. On the western part of the route, crews first bored and blasted a pioneer work tunnel which then let them start work on various sections of the parallel main tunnel. This 1927 photo shows construction workers in the center heading of the Great Northern Railway's new Cascade Tunnel. Electrically-powered compressors supplied air for the pneumatic drills. The men drilled holes and loaded them with explosives to blast the tunnel shaft through the rock. At that time, few workers wore hard hats or ear protection. Original title: Denver ring drills - in the center heading of the G.N.Ry.Co. new 8 mile tunnel, Scenic to Berne - A. Guthrie & Co. contractors.
