Notes
  • Significance: William D. Menor came to Jackson Hole in 1892 and homesteaded on 148 acres of land on the west bank of the Snake River. He built a log cabin having two rooms near the river. His principal income was from the operation of a ferry. The Snake, a dangerous river to cross, split the Jackson Hole area into east and west sections. Most of the arable land was on the east side while the bulk of the forest, source of logs needed by farmers and ranchers, was on the west side of the Snake. A ferry at this location was necessary since the only means of crossing the Snake was over twenty miles north or south of this point. Bill Menor built a store building attaching it to the east end of his cabin. The barn and blacksmith shop are gone now but the homestead cabin and attached store were restored in 1949 as were the smokehouse and the storage building with its root cellar. The cabin and storage building were whitewashed with lime made in Brother Holiday Menor's kiln. Bill Menor sold his ferry and the buildings to Maud Noble in 1918.
