Description

Arrived at Hohenschwangau outside Füssen - and now I am done driving for the day.

Driving the Autobahn was a joy thanks to courteous, disciplined drivers and well-maintained pavement. In the interest of proper break-in, however, I only topped out at 143 km/h (88 MPH) for the day, and drove much closer to the 130 km/h (81 MPH) "recommended speed limit" for most of the stretch. As I neared Füssen, I could see the Alps rise in the distance - what a sight.

Of course, I needed a good soundtrack for the drive. I picked the most appropriate - Haydn's Emperor Hymn, which used to be the national anthem of Hapsburg Austria before becoming the national anthem of Germany. Couldn't pick a better composition for speeding on the Autobahn in a Mercedes-Benz, and as stunningly appropriate as listening to George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue while speeding away even faster in a United Airlines jumbo jet (Rhapsody in Blue has been United's theme music since the 1980s).
