Merchant Marine - Miscellaneous Training - COMBINATION MATTRESS OR PILLOW AND LIFE PRESERVER USED ON U.S. MERCHANT MARINE
Description
  • Scope and content: Original Caption: COMBINATION MATTRESS OR PILLOW AND LIFE PRESERVER USED ON U.S. MERCHANT MARINE. Mattress and pillow used in berths of sailors and firemen aboard on the Uncle Sam's merchant ships are of most approved type for sea use. They make good bedding and are best sort of life preservers. Their filling is a soft resilient tropical fiber known as kapec, which will sustain 25 times its own weight in salt water for 48 hours. Picture shows sanitary slip-covers for denim used on bedding on Shipping Board vessels, also strap by which to hold the pillow when used as life preserver.
