Description
English: Cairo Egyptian Museum, 2016.

First mention of Israel. Label at Egyptian Museum reads:

  • The Israel Stela*

Thebes-- Reign of Merenptah (c. 1213 - 1203 BCE)

Set up in Merenptah's mortuary temple at Thebes, this granite stele bears an inscription dating to the 5th year of that king's reign. It tells of Egypt's victory over their Libyan enemies, who had attacked the Delta with the help of a coalition of displaced peoples from around the Mediterranean known as the Sea Peoples. At the end of the text is a list of some of Egypt's enemies, which includes the name Israel. This is the first occurrence of this name known from the ancient world.
