Description
English: Metanorthosite from the Precambrian of New York State, USA. (~18.8 cm across at its widest)

Anorthosite is a coarsely-crystalline, intrusive igneous rock dominated by plagioclase feldspar - typically labradorite. A major occurrence of this uncommon rock is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. In this area, the rocks have been regionally metamorphosed, but the overall mineralogy is the same. The dark bluish-gray crystals are plagioclase phenocrysts. The lighter-colored areas are finely-crystalline groundmass, also composed of plagioclase.

Locality: float block (transported) at Cranberry Lake, southeastern St. Lawrence County, northwestern Adirondack Mountains, northern New York State, USA
