Description

Miao villagers' choir from Xiaoshuijing, a remote village in Fumin County, southwest China's Yunnan Province has stepped onto the world stage for many times.

Xiaoshuijing is a remote village inhabited by Miao ethnic minority in Yunnan Province. Most of the villagers in Xiaoshuijing are of the Miao people, with some 80 percent Christians.

"Miao people used to sing folk songs of primitive ecology in high-pitched and bright voices," said Zhang Xiaoming, head of the Xiaoshuijing Farmers' Choir, "Now we have applied traditional bel canto to sing."

The origin of the vocal ensemble dates back to 1937 when Christianity was introduced here. The Xiaoshuijing Farmers' Choir was established in 2002 in the mountains of Fumin County. The amateur four-part choir has 60 members, aged 16-50. In the Miao village with only over 140 families, the villagers learned to sing from their parents at an early age. Their singing skills have been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth.

"During the performance, we gave a strong impression to our western audiences. Wearing the ethnic costumes, the choir sang traditional baroque music and bel canto, which greatly impressed the spectators. This is the biggest contrast. After the show, many foreign friends said that they did not expect this to happen," Zhang added.
