Français : Portrait de Michel-Louis Melan (1752-1792), architecte-expert du roi Louis XVI, en habit d'architecte du Roi, assassiné par la foule à Paris le 10 août 1792
Michel-Louis Melan porte un habit rouge, brodé d’or, que l’on peut rapprocher de deux autres portraits d’architectes du Roi, celui de Gabriel et celui de Ledoux, par Drolling (vers 1785, conservé au Musée Carnavalet). Cet habit qui faisait à juste titre la fierté de notre homme, fut aussi, durant les temps troublés de la Révolution française, la cause de sa mort. En effet, lors du massacre des Gardes suisses aux Tuileries le 10 août 1792, Melan, « en habit rouge » brodé d’or d’architecte du Roi, fut d’après les témoignages de l’époque, confondu avec un suisse et massacré (sur le Pont neuf d’après certains témoignages, dans la section du « Contrat social » vers l’église Saint Eustache selon d’autres). Le tableau apporte un éclairage plus technique sur cet épisode : en effet, il permet de comprendre pourquoi il fut confondu avec les Gardes suisses. Michel Louis Melan (1752-1792), architecte-Expert du Roi, fit construire notamment le Vauxhall d’été de la rue de Bondy (avec le décorateur Moench) et est l'auteur des dessins de la « Redoute chinoise » dans l’enceinte de la foire Saint Laurent, jardin exotique avec jeu de bagues, pagode, escarpolette orientale qui fit son ouverture le 28 juin 1781.
