Description
English: The “Cosette” motif from Victor Hugo’s socially critical novel Les Misérables (1862) inspired numerous artists in the 19th century, including the Luxembourger Michel Sinner (1826-1882), who met Victor Hugo personally during the latter’s exile in Luxembourg. The figure of Cosette, a child born out of wedlock and exploited by her greedy foster parents before the ex-convict Valjean takes care of her, represented the fate of many orphans in the 19th century.
