Description

Valletta, Malta. This road is the location of the final scene of the double Oscar winning film "Midnight Express", which tells the story of a young American who was jailed in Istanbul for drug smuggling. Filming was not allowed in Turkey but was instead made in Malta.

Near the end of the film Billy Hayes is seen walking along this road, having just escaped from the brutal prison.

In the film the road is unsurfaced but otherwise the scene is little changed from 1978 when filming took place. The location is just outside Fort St Elmo, where most of the film was shot (the jail).
