Summary edit
DescriptionMiko vestal virgin robes, fan and torikabuto ( phoenix hat ).jpg |
English: A hand-coloured book plate of a miko ( Japanese Shinto priestess/shamaness ) in ceremonial dress. Date of lithograph 1895-1900. A cropped form of an image (released to public domain) of a double page spread from an (unnamed) work on Japanese culture and religion held in the Rijksmuseum. Original, uncropped image created by Wikimedia Commons user Mr. Nostalgic at 10:18, 3 January 2020.
Image cropped to show illustration in larger format, in order to show miko’s ceremonial hat more clearly - this is of the type called, in Japanese, “torikabuto” ( bird/phoenix hat ). The hat shown here is a rather plain example of the type: in more elaborate examples it is apparent that the very top of the hat depicts the head of the phoenix ( Japanese “hōō”) while the lower parts of the headdress depict the down-swept wings and tail of the mythological bird. |
