Summary
editBack view of a hang glider on a relaxed glide seemingly (but not actually) above the clouds. The evident kingpost was a technology used in 1800s hang gliders. The evident stiffened Rogallo flexible wing was used in the 1960-61 NASA experimental hanging-pilot Paresev gliders. The evident triangle control frame was used cable-stayed in hang gliders at least by the Breslau 1908 gliding club hang glider and later instructed by George Spratt in 1929 for hang gliders.
The photo was taken in 1975 at Merriam crater near Flagstaff, Arizona. The pilot is Miles Fagerlie. The glider is a 17' standard "Papillion" made in May 1974 by the long-defunct company "US Hang Gliders Inc", Phoenix, Arizona. The purchase price at that time was $395 USD including the swing seat harness and a day of lessons. Estimated performance was a L/D of 4:1 and a minimum sink rate of around 450 feet per minute.
