Title
Military Administration - Transportation - Rail - Rolling Stock - NEW ARMY FNGINEERS PRACTICE FOR SERVICE IN FRANCE
Description
  • Scope and content: Original Caption: NEW ARMY FNGINEERS PRACTICE FOR SERVICE IN FRANCE. To get practical experience in the work they were later called upon to do when they arrived in France, men of the 101st Engineers, located in Boston, Mass., constructed roadbeds and laid street car tracks in the streets of Boston. Every forenoon a detail of 25 men and a lieutenant put in three hours of work. In the sections being laid by the men of the Engineer Regiment most of the work was done by hand in order that the men may get the experience. They already laid a two mile stretch of track on the Boston and Albany road between Westboro and North Grafton, Mass. The 101st Engineers was formerly the old crack command, the 1st Corps of Cadets, M.V.M. They recruited their ranks up to 3,000 men and 65 officers. Any opportunity to acquire added knowledge of field engineering was jumped at by the men who were enthusiastic over the prospect of service abroad. Photo shows men of the 101st Engineers using a pneumatic drill while tearing up an old car roadbed in Boston.
