Summary edit

Description
English: As seen in July 2021, the historic cemetery at Fort Niagara State Park, New York contains the remains of about 350 individuals, representing casualties and veterans of every U.S. military conflict up through the First World War, and their families. The large rectangular headstone to the right is dedicated "to the memory of unknown officers and enlisted men who participated in the early Indian Wars on this frontier and in the Revolutionary War whose remains are interred in this cemetery", mostly in unmarked graves. Just to the left of the tree in the foreground is a monument erected by Mary Cantillion Wagner in honor of her great-grandfather Sgt. Lewis Leffman (1798-1885), a decorated Army veteran who holds U.S. Army records as the longest-serving noncommissioned officer (55 years), the longest period of continuous service in the same position (39 years as an Ordinance Sergeant), and the most reenlistments (13). Sgt. Leffman is buried here along with his wife Elizabeth (1807-1893), daughter Sarah Cantillion (1825-1893), and mother-in-law Jane Armitage (1753-1849). The efforts of his descendants at preserving his gravesite against the War Department's plans to relocate the remains to a cemetery in Elmira were also significant in that they led to the passage of legislation preserving all historic U.S. military cemeteries.
