Summary
editDescriptionMilky Way Map Near Sol 2022 neutral A5.png |
English: Map of an artist's impression of the Milky Way, cropped to an area around the Sun (Sol). 637 pixels ≙ 1000 light years, scale included at the bottom right of the map. Cropped to A5. Image resolution: exactly 50 pixels per millimeter.
Includes the calculated positions of the stars Maia, Electra, the Sun, the Helix Nebula, HD 93129 A (part of Trumpler 14), Eta Carinae A (part of Eta Carina, located inside the Carina Nebula) and NGC 6334 (Cat's Paw Nebula). Galactic coordinates obtained via https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/Tools/convcoord/convcoord.pl , converted to cartesian coordinates using x=distance*cos(GalL), y=distance*sin(GalB), z=(-1)*distance*sin(GalL) to obtain a Sun-centered map, then scaled to pixel values using LibreOffice Calc. The largest source of errors is probably the distance. y is the axis towards the viewer and not displayed on the two-dimensional image. x/y/z coordinates for Sol, Maia, Electra, Helix Nebula, NGC 6334, HD 93129 A and Eta Carinae A are 0/0/0; -349.564/-143.633/-86.0511; -388.421/-161.729/-95.5464; 524.783/-545.866/-383.54; 5464.59/52.375/838.699; 2242.52/-75.0594/7151.65; and 2268.88/-82.4561/7153.82, respectively, in light years. |
