Millettia pinnata Synonyms: Pongamia pinnata, Pongamia glabra, Derris indica, Galedupa pinnata Common names: Pongam Tree, Indian Beech Tree, Honge Tree, Panigrahi, karanja It is native to humid and sub-tropic environments (Asia, West Africa, Australasia...), it is thought to have originated in India. Pea flowers in inflorescences and large light-green deltoid (heart shaped) leaves. Deciduous. In Australia normally (!) flowers November-December Its root, bark, leaves, sap, and flower also have medicinal properties and traditionally used as medicinal plants . Concentrated seeds extract can be found in various herbal preparations which are widely available in the market today. In India the seeds are collected to obtain Karanja or Honge oil.
