English: The Chinese expression míngwáng shèndé, sìyí xiánbīn 明王慎德, 四夷咸賓 ("When a wise king is heedful of virtue, foreigners from all quarters come as guests"), translated into nine languages: Xītiān 西天 (Sanskrit), Nǚzhí 女直 (Jurchen), Dádá 鞑靼 (Tatar, i.e. Mongolian), Gāochāng 高昌 (Qocho), Huíhuí 回回 (Persian), Xīfān 西番 (Tibetan), Bǎiyí 百夷 (Xishuangbanna Dai), Miǎndiàn 緬甸 (Burmese), and Bābǎi 八百 (Lanna). From Wáng Shìzhēn 王世貞 (1526–1590), Yǎnzhōu Shānrén Sìbùgǎo 弇州山人四部稿 vol. 168 folio 20. Presumably the phrase was originally produced by the Ming dynasty Bureau of Translators (Sìyí Guǎn 四夷館), which was responsible for producing a set of glossaries called Huáyí Yìyǔ 華夷譯語 (Sino-Foreign Translations) in these languages. The Jurchen text on this page is also used in the design of an ink mould shown in 《方氏墨譜》 (Fāngshì Mòpǔ, 1588) vol. 1 folio 32b (see Fangshi Mopu 1 32b.jpg). However, the 11th, 13th and 14th Jurchen characters in Fāngshì Mòpǔ are corrupted, but correct in Wáng Shìzhēn's version. |
