Ängelholms första kyrka förstördes 1565 i samband med kriget mot svenskarna (Skåne tillhörde Danmark då). Kyrkan förblev ruiner i mer är hundra år.

I början av 1700-talet byggdes en ny kyrka upp på den gamla kyrkans grund. Delar av denna kyrka finns kvar i Ängelholms nuvarande kyrka. I mitten av 1800-talet genomförde man en stor renovering och gjorde dessutom en tillbyggnad till kyrkan. Då fick kyrkan sin nuvarande exteriör.

I mitten av 1900-talet genomgick kyrkan två större renoveringar. På 30-talet gjordes den nuvarande bänkinredningen och dessutom byggdes sakristian till. Under 40-talet genomgick kyrkan en övergripande inre förnyelse. Då tillkom dopfunten samt altarskåpet med sina målningar av Torsten Nordberg.

I början av 1980-talet tillkom tillbyggnaden mot norr med toalett för kyrkobesökare och med samlingsrum inför olika gudstjänster. År 2000 var det åter dags för en stor invändig renovering. Kyrkan kalkades om helt, nytt fristående altare inskaffades liksom nya flyttbara knäfall vilka ersatte den gamla altarrundeln. Dessutom köptes det in en ny, stor och mäktig orgel från Danmark.
