I was sitting around at home on Monday, vaguely intending to get some work done, when I came across an article reminding me of something that had totally slipped my mind: it was my very last day to see the Toronto Model Railway Club!

For over 65 years, the club has been located in the basement of a factory building in what was, when they moved in, an active industrial area. By the 1980's or so, it was a mostly abandoned industrial area, then home to artists' studios and illegal loft apartments. Eventually, inevitably, the developers got their hands on the neighbourhood. The building housing the club is now called the Liberty Market, and contains shops and restaurants catering to the nearby condo dwellers. The landlord recently decided it was as good a time as any to hit the club with what surely must have been their first rent increase in many decades, if not ever. I overheard a club member saying that the amount they previously paid for a full year would only cover twenty-something days of their new rent.
