Woman riding a Math Yamaha motorcycle

Summary edit

Description
English: In Benin this Yamaha motorcycle is commonly known as the Mate 50. In the 80's it was called Mon Mari Est Capable (My Husband is Capable) to refer to the capacity of the husband of the woman who rides. It is a form of expression of the woman loved by her husband and also reflects a social rank.

The same practice goes with fabric designs which are forms of non-verbal communication in African society in general and in Benin in particular. A woman who wants to pass on a message to those around her can put on a suit sewn with a cloth loincloth with a rather evocative design.

The meaning of the Math 50 motorcycle has changed a lot with the arrival on the market of cheaper motorcycles made in China.
