English: « This interesting cerernony took place on the Montreal Cricket Grounds, which were then situated on St. Catherine street West, between what are now Bishop and Crescent streets. Bishop Fulford, Metropolitan of Canada, consecrated the colors, which were subsequently handed Lieut.-Col. Osborne Smith, commandant of the Vics., by General Williams, the “Hero of Kars” Among the militia forces present were Major S. J. Lymuan’s Battalion of Foot Artiliery, Lieut.-Col. Routh’s Royals, and Major Malhiot’s Chasseurs. Scattered over the ground were representatives of the Scotch Fusilier Guards, the Grenadier Guards, and the 47th Regulars, then quartered in Montreal.
The band of the last-named regiment supplied the music, and the Rev. Mr. (now Canon) Ellegood and the Chaplain of H.M. Forces attended Bishop Fulford. A few years since the colors given the Vics on this occasion were deposited in the Church of St. James the Apostle, where they may still be seen. As rifle regiments are no longer permitted to carry colors, it is doubtful if the above scene will ever again be duplicated. (Photo by courtesy of Sergt. John Donovan, of the Vics.) » |
