St John's Anglican Church at Weston, Mooi River, South Africa

Summary

Description
English: St John's Anglican Church, Mooi River, Natal, South Africa.
St John's is an interesting old church. It was built in 1872 in what was to be the town of Weston. About 15 years later the railway line was built and it by-passed Weston about 2km upstream. This meant that Weston never grew and the town of Mooi River grew up around the railway bridge. In the later 1870s it was barricaded and people were given protection against possible attacks from Zulus during this unsettled period. It served as the main Parish Church until the Church of St Paul's was built in Mooi River in 1941. There was monthly worship at St John's until about 2003 when it was decided to focus Anglican worship at St Paul's. You may have noticed the grave of General Woodgate who fought in the Boer War at the Battle of Spionkop. I don't know why he was buried in this cemetery as there is a Military cemetery nearby with many graves. Mooi River was the site of a military hospital.
Afrikaans: St John's Anglikaanse Kerk te Mooirivier, KwaZulu-Natal.
St John's is 'n interessante ou kerk.
