Notes
  • See also HABS PA-5381 for additional documentation. Includes photographs and written data.
  • Significance: The Moravian Pottery and Tile Works is a rare surviving example of a successful and influential American Arts and Crafts tile factory. Its original architecture, machinery, kilns, tile molds, and business records remain largely intact, providing an unequalled record of the technical, economic, and esthetic activities of an early twentieth-centry American art pottery. Designed by archaeologist, Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930), the factory was built of reinforced concrete in the style of Southern California mission architecture. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1985.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: N183
