Summary edit

Description

Morecambe signal box located by the south side of the line at the end of the platforms at Morecambe Promenade station. Tuesday 3rd November 1987

Morecambe signal box was a Midland Railway Type 4b design which opened in 1907 replacing a 1892-built signal box located a short distance to the east. On 11th May 1919 a replacement 92 lever Midland Railway Tappet frame was installed. The signal box was closed at 23:20hrs on 7th February 1994 and double line absolute block between Bare Lane and Morecambe signal boxes was replaced by two parallel single lines between Bare Lane signal box and Morecambe station. The Up & Down Morecambe being operated by one train working without staff, and the Up & Down Heysham being operated by one train working with staff

The signal box carries a British Rail corporate identity printed design nameplate

The signal box is viewed beyond Morecambe signal box (left to right) signal 79 (from siding 2), 63 signal (platform 3 starting) and 62 signal (platform 4 starting). 62 and 63 signals are carried on concrete posts possibly of Midland Railway origin, which had Morecambe Promenade cast below gound level on the post. Note that 62 signal has a shortened arm. 79 signal is a London Midland and Scottish Railway 1941 type standard dwarf signal

The former Midland Railway Morecambe station was renamed Morecambe Promenade on 2nd June 1924, but possibly the signal box was never renamed
