Summary edit

Description

The Post Office was surprisingly slow in acquiring its own fleet of motorised vehicles. In March 1919 the entire fleet used for mail services consisted of 20 motorcycle combinations and ‘four tri-cars’. Contractors were relied on to supply the necessary transport.

The availability of second-hand vehicles following World War I encouraged The Post Office to experiment with a state owned fleet. GWK and Ford vans were amongst those first purchased. However, quite quickly, Morris became the favoured marque and remained so for a number of years.

This van is typical of the type of small van purchased in large numbers in the inter-war years. The forty cubic foot capacity enabled it to carry far more mail than a motorcycle combination and it provided the driver with better protection from the weather.
