Summary edit

Description

In 1953, the Morris Minor van was introduced as the standard small capacity mail van. It replaced the earlier Morris Series Z that had been used by The Post Office for small-scale deliveries. The first examples had a split windscreen, rubber front wings and high position headlamps.

A sturdy and reliable vehicle, the Morris Minor was held in high regard by postal workers. It remained the standard mail van for nearly twenty years. Production stopped in 1971 and the last Morris Minor van entered postal service the following year.

There were few small capacity vans on the market that the Post Office thought to be suitable replacements for the Morris Minor. A number of different types were tried out, including the Reliant three-wheeler, the Mini van, the Morris Marina and, what eventually became the standard small van used for a wide variety of duties, the Ford Escort.

However, none of these later replacements would hold the same place in people’s hearts and memories as that of the ‘little red van’ - the Morris Minor
