O Mosteiro dos Jerónimos é frequentemente conhecido como a 'jóia' do estilo Manuelino. Este estilo combina elementos arquitectónicos dos períodos Gótico e Renascentista, juntando-os a uma simbologia real e naturalista, que o tornam verdadeiramente único. Em 1496, o rei D. Manuel I pediu à Santa Sé autorização para construir um grande mosteiro à entrada de Lisboa, perto das margens do rio Tejo. As obras começaram em 1501 e só terminaram quase um século depois. D. Manuel I e os seus descendentes foram enterrados em túmulos de mármore situados na capela-mor da Igreja e capelas laterais do transepto. A dedicação do mosteiro à Virgem de Belém foi outro factor que influenciou a decisão régia. O Mosteiro dos Jerónimos veio substituir a igreja que invocava Santa Maria de Belém, onde os monges da Ordem de Cristo davam assistência aos muitos marinheiros que por ali passavam. Por esta razão, D. Manuel I escolheu os monges da Ordem de S. Jerónimo, cujas funções eram rezar pela alma do rei e dar apoio espiritual aos que partiram da Praia do Restelo à descoberta de novas terras. Por ter sido construída nos bancos de areia do rio Tejo, a estrutura do mosteiro não sofreu muitos danos com o terramoto de 1755.
