Description
Photograph of the Mount Carmel Hospital facilities. Dr. W. B. Hawkes donated the initial funds to build a hospital in the Franklinton neighborhood in 1885. When he died shortly thereafter, Dr. John Hamilton continued the project and saw the completion of the four story brick building that was dedicated on July 16, 1886 as Mount Carmel Hospital. Dr. Hamilton was instrumental in convincing the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Notre Dame, Indiana, to staff the new hospital. This original building, commonly known as Hawkes Hospital, was soon overcrowded and expansions were made. In 1891 the new wing was added to the east of the original building. The cornerstone for this was laid on May 31, 1891. More room was again needed, and in 1908 the newest six story wing was completed west of the original structure. At the same time a new Chapel was added to the east end of the entire complex. This image shows the hospital as it appeared after the 1891 additions.
