Description

This is a picture of the Mount Vernon Junior High School. It originally opened in 1888 as Twenty Third Street Elementary but was later made a junior high school, and renamed. It later became a school for the special needs students who were not allowed in regular public schools. The last school year Mount Vernon was open was 1957-1958. The building has since been torn down.

In 1916, the school had 21 teachers and 660 pupils. The principal was Jane M. Hammond.
