Description At the Pousada in Guimaraes. "According to some records, the first religious building was erected on this site in the 7th century and was later expanded during the Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, as demonstrated by the Mozarabic door that can still be seen in the cloisters. It is also said that the countess Mumadona Dias of Guimarães commissioned the building of a basilica here in the 10th century; however, it was in 1154 that D. Mafalda, the wife of D. Afonso Henriques and the first of Portugal’s first ladies of Portugal, gave the monastery to the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, in honour of Santa Marinha, protector of women in labour."
