Description |
This posthumous portrait of Nicholas Brown II was commissioned by Butler Hospital in 1847, six years after the subject's death. Sully copied Brown's face from Chester Harding's 1836 portrait, completing the body from his imagination. Brown holds a telescope and letter, symbolizing vision and steadfastness, respectively. A Quaker-style hat—possibly a reference to Moses Brown—rests against a column ostensibly belonging to Manning Hall. |
