The Accomplices by Phiz (Hablot K. Browne). Illustration to Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities. Book II, Chapter xix. All the Year Round (October 1859); issued 20 August 1859. Fifth monthly part, October 1859. Mr Lorry and Miss Pross guiltily destroy Dr Manette’s workbench for shoemaking. Dickens prose makes it seem like they are committing a criminal act, thus the ironic title as his mind has been disordered by the discovery of the relationship between his son-in-law, Charles Darnay, and the Evremonde family who were responsible for his incarceration in The Bastille. He resorts to making the shoes at night in his distressed state. The illustration shows the pair looking anxious at the danger of discovery of the destruction. Phiz employs emblematic details such as the skull on top of the book case and has a portrait of a young woman, presumably Lucie Darnay as she now is, looking down on them from the wall. The image is caricature-ish and exploits rare moments of humour in the narrative.
