| Description |
William Stainton was born in Knottingley, near Pontefract in 1877 and brought up in Etton by his grandparents, James and Hannah. By 1899 William Stainton had joined the army and was a yeoman in 109th Squadron Imperial Yeomanry Yorkshire Hussars. In the South African war he earned the South Africa Medal and in October 1904, was given Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Beverley. William went on to become the valet of Charles Frohman, a celebrated Broadway director. On 7 May 1915 he died when the RMS Luistania was sunk with the loss of 1198 lives.
