2007年頃から、東京のインターバンク市場にて、為替相場の方向性が、昼をはさんで午後になると、相場を反転させる大きな要因はないにもかかわらず反対方向（主にドル買い）へ振れる現象がしばしば見られた。こうした状況が頻繁に起こったため、原因を探っていくと、主に日本の主婦やサラリーマンなどの個人のFX投資家が、昼休みを利用して一斉に円売り・ドル買いの注文を出していたことが判明。相場を左右させるほどの日本の個人投資家の資金力を世界に見せつけ、海外にて「ミセスワタナベ」という呼び名が生まれた。「ワタナベ」は海外でよく知られた日本人を代表する姓である。現在では、マーケットを動かす大きな力として認識され、大口のプロディーラーでさえ、その動向があなどれない存在になっている。
2010年には、円が高騰、8月には1ドル83円半ばを付けたが、その後、円は対ドルで伸び悩んだ。その原因の一として「ミセス・ワタナベ」が値下がりで値ごろ感の出たドルを一斉に買う動きに出たためと分析された。市場では外為証拠金取引（FX取引）の普及により、市場における個人投資家の存在感は確実に増してきており、「ミセス・ワタナベ」をはじめとする個人投資家のドル買いは軽んじらないと見ている。国際決済銀行が2010年9月1日に公表した「世界の外為取引に関する調査」（2007年─2010年）によれば前回調査時に比し、日本の取引が大幅に増加し、スイス、シンガポールを抜き世界3位に浮上したという。
