| Description |
Seen from downtown Walnut Creek. Mt. Diablo is a key landmark in Northern California. It separates the urban San Francisco Bay Area to the west, from the agricultural San Joaquin Valley to the east. As Mt. Diablo is located in a part of California that does not have many other high mountains, it is said that on a clear day, it is possible to see 35 of California's 58 counties from the summit of Mt. Diablo. Although getting to the summit is a rather easy drive, I won't attempt it this day. Contra Costa County, which includes Concord and Martinez as well as Walnut Creek, and marks the northeastern, inland portions of the San Francisco Bay Area, had been originally slated to be named Diablo County, after the mountain. However, that did not happen due to religious objections, as the Catholics did not want to live in "Devil County." |
