DescriptionMt. Royal Drive, Eagle Rock.jpg |
English: Photo taken on the corner of Mt. Royal Dr. (formerly Royal Drive) and Colorado Blvd., looking north toward the mountains in Eagle Rock. Two large stone pillars mark the entrance to Mt. Royal Dr.; although the sidewalks are paved, the street is still a dirt road. Two men and two women can be seen standing at the corner next to a stone pillar, and a two-story Craftsman style home is visible in the background. Eagle Rock is a neighborhood in northeastern Los Angeles that derives its name from a massive boulder at the district's northern edge, which contains an indentation that casts a vaguely bird-shaped shadow on the rock at certain times of day. In the 1880s Eagle Rock existed as a farming community with grand Victorian farmhouses and many exquisite Craftsman homes in charming neighborhoods. In 1906 Eagle Rock became an independent city and was incorporated in 1911; in 1914 it also became home to Occidental College, designed by famed architect Myron Hunt. Today, several streets in Eagle Rock are lined with historic and architecturally significant homes done in the Colonial revival, English Tudor, Craftsman, Georgian, Streamline Moderne, Art Deco and Spanish/Mission style of yesteryear. |
