| Description |
Mule racing made a welcome change from warfare on the battlefields of France on 23 June 1918. The mules steeplechase at the New Zealand Divisional sports event held in Authie, France attracted cheering crowds. Soldiers, used to the contrary ways of their equine friends, were not surprised when there were some glitches to the programme. As 2nd Lt Jack Pryce wrote in a letter to his family: “The mule race was the best of the lot. Some of the mules would not start and others turned round and ran back to the starting point when they were half way round the course. The funniest part was trying to get them to jump the hurdles. One mule absolutely refused to jump but walked clean through the hurdles.” Shown here is a photograph of the mules steeplechase taken by Henry Armytage Sanders, the official NZEF Photographer.
