Description
English: The Roepstorff (also spelled Røepstorf) was built in Copenhagen in 1778 at Grønlands Handels Skibsværft. It was rigged as a frigate, carried 16 guns and was designed by Henrik Gerner. It was measured at 185 læster (400 BRT/308 NRT). The Roepstorff was chiefly employed in the West Indies trade, but did one (very prosperous) voyage to the East Indies in 1781-1783. It was named after Ulrich Wilhelm de Roepstorff, who was its first owner. Further information at Jørgen Marcussen's site (in Danish). The painter Friderich Wessel Munck made four ship portraits of vessels from the West Indies trade around 1782. See also Museet for Søfart (in Danish). Gouache, size 46.5 x 56.5 cm.
