Die Arbeiten entstanden 1993 in der Asylunterkunft Haus Bertram in München-Pasing. Dort fotografierte Andreas Bohnenstengel ueber drei Monate die Situation von Asylbewerbern, insbesondere die von Kindern. Der lange Zeitraum war nötig, um ein Vertrauensverhaeltnis zwischen dem Fotografen und den Kindern aufzubauen. Bohnenstengel ging es bei seiner Arbeit vor allem darum, solche Erlebnisse zu dokumentieren, die für das spätere Erwachsenenleben der Kinder prägenden Charakter haben. Andreas Bohnenstengel wurde 1970 in München geboren. Seit 1995 ist er dort als freier Fotograf mit dem Schwerpunkt Reportage und Portrait tätig.

Seine Fotos wurden in zahlreichen Zeitschriften – u. a. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Stern, Der Spiegel, ZEIT Magazin – veröffentlicht. 1996 und 1997 erhielt er den Kodak European Gold Award – Preis für Portraitfotografie.
