Summary edit

Description
English: "Limestone sarcophagus. 3rd-4th century AD. The limestone originated from Lincolnshire. Roughly hewn sarcophagus with no decoration. The lid, already cracked and broken upon excavation, is not displayed here. It is likely that the sarcophagus was buried below ground with the lid at ground level acting as a grave-marker. There is no inscription to indicate the name of the deceased.

Lead coffin.

Excavations at Spitalfields in 1999 uncovered part of the northern Roman cemetry that lay beyond the city wall at Bishopsgate. Archaeologists discovered an extremely rare limestone sarcophagus that was found to contain a lead coffin and the skeleton of a young woman."
