DescriptionMuzzle of German 38-cm gun Chuignes 1918 AWM E02777.jpg | AWM caption : France: Picardie, Somme, Chuignes. Lieutenant Cecil Olbers Clark, MM, MC, 3rd Battalion, holds a six inch ruler to the muzzle of a destroyed German 14 inch naval gun to give an indication of the weapon's calibre. The barrel has been packed with mud or concrete and blown from its trunnions to prevent it from being reused. Part of the camouflaged and damaged gun carriage can be seen in the background (right). This huge artillery piece was emplaced and hidden by the Germans in the Arcy Wood near Chuignes. As the Allied offensive drew near, the gun was destroyed by the Germans, who then withdrew from the area. The gun was captured by Australians from the 3rd Battalion on 23 August 1918. | ||||
