Description

Mysore, Maharaja's Palace

Mysore, also known as Mysuru, is the third largest city in the state of Karnataka, India, which served as the capital city of Mysore Princely Kingdom (Kingdom of Mysore) for nearly six centuries, from 1399 until 1947. It is located at the base of the Chamundi Hills.

The Kingdom of Mysore was ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty, except for a brief period in the late 18th century when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan were in power. Patrons of art and culture, the Wodeyars contributed significantly to the cultural growth of the city. Mysore is noted for its palaces, including the Mysore Palace, and for the festivities that take place during the Dasara festival.

The Palace of Mysore (also known as the Amba Vilas Palace) is a historical palace, which is the official residence and seat of the Wodeyars — the Maharajas of Mysore, the former royal family of Mysore. The palace houses two durbar halls (ceremonial meeting halls of the royal court) and incorporates a mesmerizing and gigantic array of courtyards, gardens, and buildings. The palace is in the central region of inner Mysore, facing the Chamundi Hills eastward.

Built by the Maharaja Rajarshi H.H. Krishnarajendra Wadiyar IV, Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, and has more than 4 million visitors annually.
