Summary
editDescriptionMystery object on Tramore Strand - geograph.org.uk - 1513349.jpg |
English: Mystery object on Tramore Strand. What appears to be a solid iron ball, approximately 2 feet in diameter. It looked very heavy, although I didn't try to lift it. It has been suggested that "it's a ballast weight from a deep-sea fishing net. It's not solid, but was intended to more or less roll along the sea bed keeping the net close to the bottom, as it was strung on the base of the net, and swivelled on this strong rope." This would make sense as I imagine that it has been washed up here rather than carried or dropped by a vehicle given the isolated location. I have found similar ballast weights but always ones made out of a hard plastic - see 1620182 for something the same size and shape; I assume that this one is simply an older example used before the plastic variety became available. |
