Français : Lekythos à fond blanc. Pélée (à gauche) confie son fils Achille (au centre) au centaure Chiron (à droite). Érétrie, par le Peintre d'Édimbourg, vers 500 a. C. Musée archéologique national, Athènes, n°550. Au centre de la scène, le jeune Achille, représenté comme un jeune homme debout, est tourné vers la gauche. Il baisse la tête pour observer un jeune âne qui passe devant lui vers la gauche, la tête penchée pour brouter. Sur la gauche, Pélée est représenté comme un homme barbu tourné vers la droite. Son épaule et son bras gauches sont drapés dans un manteau de voyage brodé et il tient deux lances dans sa main gauche. Sa main droite est appuyée sur sa hanche. Pélée regarde Chiron qui lui fait face dans la partie droite de la scène. Chiron est debout, tourné vers la droite. Il est représenté comme un centaure humain au-dessus de la taille et cheval au dessous, mais ses pattes antérieures sont des jambes humaines. Il porte une tunique qui lui descend jusqu'à mi-cuisses. Sa main droite tient l'extrémité d'un bâton qui porte appuyé sur son épaule droite. Il pose la main sur l'épaule gauche du jeune Achille. Derrière Chiron sont représentées deux branches d'arbre portant des feuilles ; elles sont stylisées sous la forme de lignes épaisses bordées de séries de points noirs. |
