Description
English: World War 1 Field Cannon

German 7.7cm Feldkanone 96 n.A. Serial Nr. 784

The First World War German 7.7 cm Feldkanone (Field Gun) 96 n.A. (neuer Art), Serial Nr. 784, arrived in Albert County on 17 July 1920 after the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean from the battlefields of France.

The 7.7 cm Feldkanone 96, manufactured by Krupp Company, was the most numerous field gun in the German Imperial Army throughout World War 1. The FK 96 required a crew of five men to manage it efficiently. Two of the crewmen sat on crude metal seats behind the gun shield. It was pulled by horses and could withstand long marches and rough terrain.

The FK 96 “war trophy” stands as a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the people of Albert County during the Great War. The FK 96 was awarded to Albert County in recognition of having one of the highest per capita enlistments of men in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in all of Canada!

The FK 96 was captured by a Canadian Battalion, but in the War Trophy Allocation report of 1920, there is no reference to who captured the gun, nor to the time of place of capture.

The “War Trophy” field cannons. Have been restored through private donations with new wheels being constructed by a wheelwright. The cannons are the authentic colour of the Imperial German Army during WW1.
